The Naming of Cats is a difficult matter,
It isn't just one of your holiday games;
You may think at first I'm as mad as a hatter
When I tell you, a cat must have THREE DIFFERENT NAMES.
First of all, there's the name that the family use daily,
Such as Peter, Augustus, Alonzo or James,
Such as Victor or Jonathan, or George or Bill Bailey -
All of them sensible everyday names.
George is a very special cat - for the longest time he existed purely as Steven Wayne's personal character. No-one else was cast as George in London - whenever Steven Wayne was off, his track was usually covered by a swing in their own costume and character. George is very much a background character, a young adult rather than a hyperactive kitten.
George's costume is lacking any strong design features, he's hatched all over with soft browns and greys, with thin strong stripes on his hips and legs. Sometimes he looks like Admetus with less ginger, sometimes like Carbucketty with more dilute markings. He can be very hard to spot! His only moment in the spotlight (besides Steven Wayne also playing Rumpuscat) was as one of Growltiger's Raffish Crew. When Steven Wayne, a member of the original cast, left the show in 2001, the character of George was retired.
Besides London, George has only appeared, recognisably the same character, in the Russian production. The name has also been used in regional and non-Napier designed productions, but not necessarily for the same character.
