|The Shiniest Show in London!
This is just the best show I've seen in years, easily my favourite show playing in London right now (not that that's particularly hard...) It's just Fabulous. So camp, so shiny, so funny, so GOOD! I have seen it a couple of times before, in 1999/2000, my dad took me when they were playing in a cabaret bar built under London Bridge railway station, and I loved it then, but this new production has just moved up a gear. The music is so good! I'd forgotten how brilliant the writing was... the current cast have made all the characters so interesting, even the previously revolting Doctor has a certain charm... even the necessary celebrity name, Faye Tozer from Steps, is bloody good! her acting is not the strongest, but her voice is more than adequate to match the gorgeous songs she gets.
But the absolute STAR, for me, is Carmen Cusack, playing Chesty Prospects, the illegal fetish fabrics smuggler. Think Meatloaf from WWRY, make her single and determined to bed a Space Vixen. Very like the original, workshop version of Meatloaf actually (Chesty came first!) She has a fantastic Jim Steinman-style Rock ballad, I need a recording of this show! One does exist... apparently...
Overall the show is so shiny. So Disco! It's silly as anything, but so well acted and fleshed out they're all believable, sympathetic characters. And the magic tricks are pretty damn good too!
I do find the costumes frustrating/inspiring tho - the designs are great, but the construction- well, whoever made them has clearly never considered Starlight Express costumes. The Space Vixen's dresses are *SO* short, and under the chunky belts they ride up even further as the pic shows, leaving the bodice wrinkled and bum uncovered - so the Space Vixens wear nice big flesh-toned granny knickers under. mmm, so sexy, not! And the knickers REALLY show... if only they had been made on the same thinking as Pearl or Dinah, with the bodice being a leotard, and the skirt connected to the bulky belt. Then under the skirt (and over flesh-tone tights, of course!) would be the leotard line, matching the dress and which could be a much higher, more flattering and sexier cut than the knickers! And the bodice would stay smooth and neat no matter what dancing they do. It seems to me they just didn't make for these costumes to be danced in. So- simple answer - I need to be making them! That's why I'm at college...
